Planting Instructions for Trees, Shrubs & Perennials
At Lisena Garden Center, we want your new plants to grow strong, healthy, and beautiful for years to come. Proper planting is one of the most important steps in helping trees, shrubs, and perennials establish successfully in your landscape.
Before You Plant
Start by choosing the best location for your plant. Consider how much sun or shade the area receives, how much space the plant will need as it matures, and whether the soil drains well. It is also helpful to think about wind exposure, your hardiness zone, and the mature size of the plant.
Soil pH can also affect plant health. Different plants prefer different soil conditions, so testing your soil before planting can help you make the right adjustments.
Preparing the Planting Area
Dig a hole that is the same depth as the root ball and about two to three inches wider. The top of the root ball should sit level with the surrounding ground. Avoid planting too deeply, as covering the trunk, stems, or crown of the plant can lead to stress, decline, or even plant loss.
If your soil is very sandy or heavy with clay, mix in organic matter such as compost, peat moss, and fresh topsoil to improve the planting area. You may also add a starter plant food to encourage strong root development.
Planting Container-Grown Plants
Carefully remove the plant from its container. If the roots are tightly wrapped or circling, gently loosen them with your fingers or make a few vertical cuts to encourage outward growth.
Place the plant in the hole so the top of the soil ball is even with the surrounding ground. Backfill halfway, water well, then add the remaining soil. Build a small berm around the plant to hold water, then apply a 2–3 inch layer of fresh cedar mulch, keeping mulch away from the base of the plant.
After Planting Care
Consistent watering is essential, especially during the first two years while plants are becoming established. Daily watering is required every day for the first 2-3 weeks after planting. When watering, avoid watering the branches, leaves, or body of the plant; instead, direct the water at the base of the plant to target the roots. A soaker hose is a great way to deliver water directly to the root zone.
Mulch helps retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and reduce weeds. We suggest reapplying every spring & fall to maintain a 2–3-inch layer.
At planting time, prune only branches that are damaged, broken, or diseased. Major shaping or structural pruning, especially for trees, should usually wait until the plant has had time to establish.
Keep in mind that many new plantings focus their energy on root growth during the first year or two, so top growth may be limited at first. With proper planting and care, your new trees, shrubs, and perennials will be on their way to long-lasting success.
